Floor Joist Calculator

Joists are counted across the width of the floor, not along the span: divide the width by the spacing, round up, and add the end joist. Enter your floor to get the joist count, rim boards, and total lumber length. Runs 100% in your browser.

About this floor joist calculator

The count follows the spacing, not the span: joists = ceiling(floor width in inches ÷ spacing in inches) + 1. The +1 is the end joist — without it, the last bay of the floor has no joist at the far edge. A 20 ft wide floor at 16 inches on center is ceiling(240 ÷ 16) + 1 = 16 joists, and a 15 ft wide floor at the same spacing is ceiling(180 ÷ 16) + 1 = 13 joists. Our floor joist guide works through the same count with span-table notes.

Width and span are easy to swap by mistake. Width here is the distance across the joists — the direction you walk when you step from joist to joist. Span is the length of each joist, wall to wall or beam to beam, and it sets how long a board to buy, not how many you need. If your floor is 20 ft across and the joists run 12 ft, you need 16 joists of 12 ft each, not 12 joists of 20 ft.

Rim joists (also called band or end joists) cap the ends of the floor frame: two boards, each as long as the span, running perpendicular to the joists. They are counted separately from the field joists above, and they also carry the ends of the subfloor sheets. Blocking between joists — short pieces that stiffen the floor and stop joists twisting — is a separate count if your layout calls for it, typically one row of blocking per 8 ft of span.

How to use

  1. Measure the floor width in feet, across the joists (perpendicular to their direction).
  2. Choose the joist spacing — 16 inches on center is standard for most homes; 12 inches suits heavy loads and tile floors.
  3. Enter the joist span in feet: the length each joist must run, support to support.
  4. Pick a waste allowance — 10% covers miscuts and a warped board or two.
  5. Press Calculate for the joist count, rim boards, and total lumber length.

Frequently asked questions

How many floor joists do I need for a 20-foot floor?

A 20 ft wide floor at 16 inches on center needs ceiling(240 ÷ 16) + 1 = 16 joists, plus 2 rim joists. Order 18 joists with 10% waste.

What is the standard floor joist spacing?

16 inches on center is the standard for most residential floors. 12 inches suits heavy loads and tile; 24 inches suits light loads and shorter spans only.

Do I count the rim joists separately?

Yes — rim joists are the two end boards running perpendicular to the field joists, each as long as the span. This calculator counts them separately from the field joists.

What size joist do I need for a 12-foot span?

That depends on species, grade, spacing, and load — check your local span tables. As a rough planning reference, 2×10 joists at 16 inches on center commonly cover spans around 12–14 feet, but the table for your lumber governs.

How much waste should I add for floor joists?

10% is a good default: it covers miscuts, a warped board, and end trimming. Add 15% if the floor has many openings or angled sections.
