How Many Bricks Do I Need? Rates, Wythes & a Worked Example
Planning estimate, not a masonry spec. Brick count is wall area times one rate — but the rate depends on your brick, your joint, and whether the wall is one wythe or two. This guide pins down the numbers, then run your wall through our brick calculator.
Bricks per square foot
A standard US modular brick (3-5/8 × 7-5/8 in) with a 3/8-inch mortar joint occupies about 0.148 square feet, which inverts to 6.75 bricks per square foot for a single-wythe wall. Published figures range 6.55–6.9 depending on exact brick and joint. For any other brick, compute your own rate: 144 ÷ ((brick length + joint) × (brick height + joint)), all in inches.
Single vs double wythe
Single wythe (one brick thick) is standard for garden walls, veneer, and freestanding features. Double wythe (two bricks thick) is structural — load-bearing walls, retaining walls, chimneys — and doubles everything: 13.5 bricks per square foot and twice the mortar. If your wall carries a roof or holds back soil, it is almost certainly double wythe and almost certainly needs engineering.
Mortar
Budget roughly one 70-lb bag of mortar per 140 bricks at standard joint thickness — about 7 bags per 1,000 bricks. Thicker joints (1/2 inch) push consumption up roughly 30%. Running bond uses less mortar than Flemish or English bond, which have more cut bricks and joints. Mortar type matters too: Type N is the general-purpose default; Type S is stronger for structural and below-grade work.
The batch rule
Order all bricks from one batch (one kiln run). Brick color shifts slightly between runs, and two batches in one wall can show a visible band of mismatched color that no amount of careful laying fixes. Order the full quantity plus waste at once, and keep a few spares — matching a repair years later from a different batch is a losing game.
Worked example: 20x6 garden wall
- Area. 20 × 6 = 120 sq ft.
- Bricks. 120 × 6.75 = 810 exact.
- With waste. 810 × 1.10 = 891 → 891 bricks.
- Mortar. 891 ÷ 140 = 6.4 → 7 bags of 70-lb mortar.
- Rough cost. At $0.65 per brick, 891 bricks run about $579 for brick alone — before mortar, sand, footing, and labor. This is a planning figure, not a quote.
UK metric variant
UK standard bricks (215 × 102.5 × 65 mm) with 10 mm joints need about 60 bricks per square metre for a single skin and 120 per square metre for double skin, before 5–10% waste. Convert your wall to square metres and use 60/120 instead of 6.75/13.5 — the waste rule is the same.
Frequently asked questions
How many bricks do I need for a 20x6 wall?
A 20×6 ft single-wythe wall is 120 sq ft × 6.75 bricks per sq ft = 810 bricks exact — order 891 with 10% waste, plus 7 bags of mortar.
How many bricks per square foot?
About 6.75 standard US modular bricks per square foot with 3/8-inch joints (range 6.55–6.9). Double-wythe walls need 13.5 per square foot.
How much mortar do I need per 100 bricks?
Roughly 0.7 bags of 70-lb mortar per 100 bricks — about 7 bags per 1,000 bricks. Thicker joints use more.
What is the difference between single and double wythe?
Single wythe is one brick thick (veneer, garden walls); double wythe is two bricks thick (structural). Double wythe doubles brick count and mortar.
How many bricks per square metre (UK)?
About 60 standard UK bricks per square metre for a single skin, 120 for double skin, before 5–10% waste.
