How Much Epoxy for a Garage Floor? Gallons, Kits & Worked Examples
Planning estimate, not a coating spec. Epoxy quantity follows area times coats — and the coats multiplier is the part people miss. This guide gives you the method, the kit math, and the prep that makes it stick — then run your garage through our epoxy garage floor calculator.
The formula
Gallons = floor area × coats × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage per gallon, rounded up. Coverage per gallon is product-specific and thickness-specific, because a gallon of 100%-solids coating covers 1,604 sq ft at just 1 mil of dry-film thickness, so coverage drops proportionally as you build thicker: about 160 sq ft per gallon at 10 mils (a pro-grade build), about 100 sq ft at 16 mils, and roughly 260 sq ft per gallon for a water-based DIY product at thin build. Always use the coverage printed on your product, not a generic figure — if a product claims one gallon does a whole garage, it is spreading under 2 mils, which is a floor paint, not a build coating.
Coats
Two coats is standard: the first coat seals the slab, the second carries the durable wear layer. One coat wears quickly under cars. Three coats suit heavy builds and metallic floors. Rough, porous, or heavily stained concrete drinks more on the first coat — use the 15% waste figure there, and patch cracks and prime bare concrete first so the epoxy does not soak in unevenly.
Kits vs gallons
Many DIY products are sold as kits with a per-coat coverage on the label — typically 250–600 sq ft per kit. The kit math is the same formula with kit coverage in place of gallon coverage: a 500 sq ft kit coats a 250 sq ft floor twice, and a 20 × 20 ft two-car garage (400 sq ft) at two coats needs 800 sq ft of coverage, which is 2 kits of a 500 sq ft kit. A 500 sq ft kit runs roughly $150–$250, so that two-car job is about $300–$500 in material for a DIY kit system.
Flake
Decorative flake is broadcast into the wet base coat: a light accent uses about 2 lb per 100 sq ft, a full broadcast uses about 5 lb per 100 sq ft (some systems quote 4–6 lb). Full broadcast is recommended so the base coat is not seen — pros only do full flake, and it looks more finished and even. A 400 sq ft garage at full broadcast needs about 20 lb of flake, and a clear topcoat over flake runs roughly 2 gallons per 350 sq ft for a typical polyaspartic clear coat.
Prep: the part that makes it stick
Most epoxy failures are prep failures. Concrete must be clean, dry, and profiled — typically by grinding or acid etching — so the coating bonds mechanically. Test for moisture first (ASTM F1869/F2170/D4263): concrete that fails needs a moisture-vapor primer (about 94 sq ft per gallon in one thick coat) or the coating can delaminate. Patch cracks, prime bare concrete, and do not coat a floor that is still curing, damp, or contaminated with oil — oil-stop primer exists for stained areas, but heavily contaminated slabs may never take a coating well.
Worked examples
- 20 × 20 ft two-car garage, 2 coats, 200 sq ft/gal, 10% waste: 400 × 2 × 1.10 = 880 sq ft ÷ 200 = 4.4 → 5 gallons; full-broadcast flake 400 × 5 ÷ 100 = 20 lb.
- 12 × 20 ft single-car garage, 2 coats, 500 sq ft kit: 240 × 2 = 480 sq ft ÷ 500 = 0.96 → 1 kit (tight — buy a second kit if the concrete is rough).
- 24 × 22 ft garage, 2 coats, 150 sq ft/gal, 10% waste, full flake: 528 × 2 × 1.10 = 1,161.6 sq ft ÷ 150 = 7.74 → 8 gallons; flake 528 × 5 ÷ 100 = 26.4 lb.
Frequently asked questions
How much epoxy do I need for a 2-car garage?
A 20 × 20 ft (400 sq ft) garage at 2 coats and 200 sq ft per gallon needs 800 sq ft of coverage — 5 gallons with a 10% waste allowance. A 500 sq ft kit covers the same garage twice over two kits.
How many square feet does a gallon of epoxy cover?
It depends on solids and thickness: 100%-solids epoxy at 10 mils covers about 160 sq ft per gallon; water-based DIY products at thin build cover roughly 260. Use your product's label figure.
How many coats of epoxy should a garage floor get?
Two coats is standard — a sealing base coat plus a wear coat. One coat wears quickly under cars; three coats suit heavy builds and metallic floors.
How much flake do I need for a garage floor?
A light accent uses about 2 lb per 100 sq ft; a full broadcast uses about 5 lb per 100 sq ft — about 20 lb for a 400 sq ft garage at full broadcast.
Can I use the calculator for epoxy kits instead of gallons?
Yes — enter the kit's coverage per coat in the coverage field and read the gallon figure as kits. A 500 sq ft kit coats a 250 sq ft floor twice.
The rest of the garage floor job
Epoxy is one garage floor finish — for the slab underneath, the concrete calculator covers yards and bags, and paint for the walls finishes the garage.
