About this baseboard calculator

Baseboard math is perimeter minus doorways: net feet = 2 × (length + width) − 3 ft per doorway, then order feet = ceiling(net × (1 + waste)) and sticks = ceiling(order feet ÷ stick length). A 12 × 12 ft room with 1 doorway is 48 ft of perimeter, 45 ft net, 50 ft to order with 10% waste, and 7 sticks of 8 ft. Our baseboard guide works through the same count with corner and casing notes.

The 3 ft door deduction is the standard interior door width (typically 30–36 inches of opening, plus casing). It is an estimate, not a measurement: if your doors are 36-inch doors, deduct 3 ft each and the waste allowance absorbs the difference; if you have a 5 ft cased opening or a double door, deduct its actual width instead by counting it as roughly two doorways. Measure the walls themselves at baseboard height, not at the floor trim line where a bowed wall can add inches.

Corners eat baseboard. A mitered outside corner wastes a few inches per cut, and a coped inside corner wastes a little more on the first attempt — that is what the waste allowance is for, and why rooms with many corners, bay windows, or short wall jogs deserve 15% instead of 10%. Buy one spare stick beyond the count if the profile is unusual or the supplier is far away: baseboard from a different dye lot or mill run can differ slightly in profile and finish.

How to use

  1. Measure the room length and width in feet, wall to wall.
  2. Count the doorways — every opening baseboard does not cross, including cased openings without a door.
  3. Choose the stick length your supplier stocks (8 ft is most common).
  4. Pick a waste allowance — 10% for a plain rectangle, 15% for many corners or angled walls.
  5. Press Calculate for net feet, order feet, and the stick count.

Good to know

Formula & standards

Formula: Net feet = 2 × (length + width) − 3 ft per doorway; order feet = ceiling(net × (1 + waste)); sticks = ceiling(order feet ÷ stick length).

Standard: None — 3 ft is the standard interior door width; no code governs trim quantity arithmetic.

Waste allowance: Miter and cope cuts at corners, plus a spare for profile mismatch between mill runs.

Frequently asked questions

How much baseboard do I need for a 12x12 room?

A 12 × 12 ft room with 1 doorway needs 48 ft of perimeter minus 3 ft for the door = 45 ft net, 50 ft to order with 10% waste, or 7 sticks of 8 ft.

How many feet do you deduct per doorway for baseboard?

3 ft per standard interior doorway — the standard door width. Deduct the actual width for double doors or wide cased openings.

What waste percentage should I add for baseboard?

10% for a plain rectangular room; 15% for rooms with many corners, bay windows, or angled walls, where miter and cope cuts waste more.

What length do baseboard sticks come in?

8 ft is the most common stock length, with 12 ft and 16 ft also available. Longer sticks mean fewer joints on long walls but are harder to transport.

Does baseboard go behind doors?

No — baseboard stops at the door casing on both sides, which is why each doorway is deducted from the perimeter.
