Laminate Flooring Calculator
Laminate is sold by the box, and the box only covers what the label says — so the count is room area plus layout waste, divided by box coverage, rounded up. Runs 100% in your browser.

About this laminate flooring calculator
Laminate math is area math with a layout tax: room area × (1 + waste) ÷ box coverage, rounded up to whole boxes. The waste percentage is where estimates go wrong, because it is set by the layout, not by optimism: straight plank runs waste about 10% to end cuts, diagonal layouts about 15% (every edge plank is a cut), and herringbone or chevron about 20% (angled cuts at every wall). Rooms with many corners, closets, or alcoves add roughly 5% on top of whichever layout figure applies. Our laminate guide covers layouts, acclimation, and the expansion gap.
Box coverage is not standard — it runs roughly 15–25 sq ft per box depending on plank size and pack count, so read the number printed on your box rather than assuming one. A 12 × 12 room at 10% waste needs 158.4 sq ft of flooring; at 20 sq ft per box that is 8 boxes (7.92 rounded up). Buying the exact fractional count is not an option — boxes are not split — and the rounding is always upward.
Underlayment is the quiet second purchase: laminate is a floating floor and almost always needs a foam or felt layer beneath it for cushioning and moisture protection (over concrete especially), unless the planks come with underlayment pre-attached. Budget the room area plus about 5% for seam overlaps, and remember the expansion gap — about 3/8 to 1/2 inch around the perimeter, hidden under baseboard — which costs roughly a square foot of material on a 12 × 12 room but must never be treated as a reason to buy less.
How to use
- Measure your room length and width in feet at the widest points, including closets you are flooring.
- Enter your box's coverage in square feet from the label (often around 20).
- Pick the layout waste — 10% straight, 15% diagonal, 20% herringbone.
- Optionally enter the price per box, then press Calculate.
Good to know
- Rectangular rooms only — L-shaped rooms should be split into rectangles and added, then the waste applied to the total.
- Does not count transition strips (one per doorway or flooring change), quarter-round, or stair nosings.
- Expansion gap, acclimation time (48–72 hours flat in the room), and subfloor flatness all affect the install but not the box count.
Frequently asked questions
How many boxes of laminate do I need for a 12x12 room?
A 12 × 12 room is 144 sq ft; with 10% waste that is 158.4 sq ft — 8 boxes at 20 sq ft per box. A diagonal layout at 15% waste needs 9 boxes.
How many square feet are in a box of laminate flooring?
It varies by brand and plank size — roughly 15–25 sq ft per box, commonly around 20. Always use the coverage printed on your box.
How much waste should I allow for laminate flooring?
10% for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal or rooms with many corners, 20% for herringbone or chevron. Add about 5% more for rooms with many alcoves or obstacles.
Do I need underlayment under laminate flooring?
Yes, unless your planks have it pre-attached. Budget the room area plus about 5% for seam overlaps — about 151 sq ft for a 12 × 12 room.
How long must laminate acclimate before installation?
Leave sealed packs flat in the room for at least 48 hours — 72 hours is safer — at normal room temperature, so the boards adjust to your home's humidity.
