How Much Laminate Flooring Do I Need? Boxes, Waste & Worked Examples
Planning estimate, not an installer quote. Laminate is sold by the box, and the box count follows area plus layout waste — where the layout, not optimism, sets the percentage. This guide gives you the numbers — then run your room through our laminate flooring calculator.
The formula
Boxes = room area × (1 + waste) ÷ box coverage, rounded up. Box coverage is not standard — it runs roughly 15–25 sq ft per box depending on plank size and pack count, commonly around 20 — so read the number printed on your box. Boxes are never split, and the rounding is always upward: 7.92 boxes means 8 boxes.
Waste by layout
Straight plank runs waste about 10% to end cuts. Diagonal layouts waste about 15%, because every edge plank is a cut rather than a whole plank. Herringbone and chevron waste about 20%, because of the angled cuts at every wall. Rooms with many corners, closets, or alcoves add roughly 5% on top of whichever layout figure applies. Patterned planks that need pattern matching along walls push waste up further.
Underlayment and the expansion gap
Laminate is a floating floor and almost always needs a foam or felt underlayment beneath it for cushioning and moisture protection (over concrete especially) — unless the planks come with underlayment pre-attached. Budget the room area plus about 5% for seam overlaps. And leave an expansion gap of about 3/8 to 1/2 inch around the perimeter, hidden under baseboard or quarter-round: laminate expands and contracts with temperature and humidity, and a floor laid tight to the walls buckles. The gap costs roughly a square foot on a 12 × 12 room but must never be treated as a reason to buy less.
Acclimation
Leave sealed laminate packs flat in the room for at least 48 hours — 72 hours is safer — at a normal temperature of about 18–22°C (65–72°F). This lets the boards adjust to your home's humidity and prevents buckling or squeaking after fitting. Do not store packs on edge or in an unheated garage and then install the same day.
Worked examples
- 12 × 12 room, straight lay, 20 sq ft boxes: 144 sq ft × 1.10 = 158.4 sq ft ÷ 20 = 7.92 → 8 boxes.
- Same room, diagonal lay: 144 × 1.15 = 165.6 ÷ 20 = 8.28 → 9 boxes.
- 15 × 20 room, straight lay: 300 × 1.10 = 330 ÷ 20 = 16.5 → 17 boxes.
Batch rule and spares
Buy all boxes from one batch — shade varies between production runs, and a mid-floor batch change can show as a visible band. Keep one spare box after the job: matching a repair years later from a different batch is a losing game, and the spare box costs little against the whole order.
Frequently asked questions
How many boxes of laminate do I need for a 12x12 room?
A 12 × 12 room is 144 sq ft; with 10% waste that is 158.4 sq ft — 8 boxes at 20 sq ft per box. A diagonal layout at 15% waste needs 9 boxes.
How many square feet are in a box of laminate flooring?
It varies by brand and plank size — roughly 15–25 sq ft per box, commonly around 20. Always use the coverage printed on your box.
How much waste should I allow for laminate flooring?
10% for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal or rooms with many corners, 20% for herringbone or chevron. Add about 5% more for rooms with many alcoves or obstacles.
Do I need underlayment under laminate flooring?
Yes, unless your planks have it pre-attached. Budget the room area plus about 5% for seam overlaps — about 151 sq ft for a 12 × 12 room.
How long must laminate acclimate before installation?
Leave sealed packs flat in the room for at least 48 hours — 72 hours is safer — at normal room temperature, so the boards adjust to your home's humidity.
The rest of the flooring job
Laminate is one flooring choice — compare carpet for bedrooms and tile for wet rooms on the same room before you commit.
