About this salary calculator

Job offers come in different units — one quotes $52,000 a year, another $25 an hour — and comparing them needs a common denominator. This calculator converts between annual, monthly, weekly and hourly pay using your actual hours per week (the classic 2,080-hour year assumes 40 hours × 52 weeks, but part-time and 37.5-hour schedules are fully supported).

Remember this is gross pay before tax. Two jobs with identical gross figures can leave very different amounts in your pocket depending on tax jurisdiction, benefits and deductions — use the conversions to compare offers, not to budget take-home pay.

Worked examples

Hourly to annual. $25 an hour at 40 hours a week: 25 × 40 = $1,000 a week; 25 × 2,080 = $52,000 a year; 52,000 ÷ 12 = $4,333.33 a month. The breakdown box shows all four figures at once.

Part-time hours. A £37,440 salary on a 37.5-hour week: the year holds 37.5 × 52 = 1,950 working hours, so the hourly rate is 37,440 ÷ 1,950 = £19.20. Change "hours per week" to anything — 20 for a two-day week, 45 for a long one — and the maths follows.

Overtime. $25 an hour, working 45 hours a week at 1.5× overtime: regular pay is 40 × 25 = $1,000; overtime is 5 × 25 × 1.5 = $187.50; the week totals $1,187.50 and the year comes to $1,187.50 × 52 = $61,750 — $9,750 more than the no-overtime year.

Comparing two job offers

Offers are rarely quoted in the same units, and hours differ too — convert both to hourly pay before judging. A $55,000 offer at 45 hours a week is 55,000 ÷ (45 × 52) = $23.50 an hour; a $50,000 offer at 37.5 hours is 50,000 ÷ (37.5 × 52) = $25.64 an hour. The "bigger" salary actually pays less per hour, and once you see both as hourly rates the trade-off is honest.

Day rates and bonuses

Contractors usually quote day rates: £400 a day at 5 days a week, 52 weeks, is 400 × 260 = £104,000 a year before holidays — subtract your unpaid days off for the real figure. Annual bonuses fold in simply: add the bonus to the annual salary first, then convert. A $60,000 salary with a $5,000 bonus behaves like $65,000 a year, or 65,000 ÷ 2,080 = $31.25 an hour at 40 hours a week.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert annual salary to hourly pay?

Divide the annual salary by total hours worked per year. For a standard 40-hour week that is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours, so $52,000 a year is $25 an hour. Enter your actual hours per week for an accurate figure.

Why does my actual paycheck differ from the calculator?

This calculator converts gross pay. Your take-home pay is lower after income tax, social security, retirement contributions, insurance premiums and unpaid leave — which vary by country, state and employer.

How is overtime pay calculated?

Hours beyond 40 per week are paid at a multiplier — commonly 1.5× ("time and a half"). The overtime section estimates your effective annual pay at your hours and multiplier.

Can I use this for part-time or custom hours?

Yes. Change "hours per week" to your actual schedule (e.g. 37.5 or 20) and all conversions adjust — no 40-hour assumption is forced.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. The calculator runs 100% in your browser with JavaScript. Your numbers never leave your device, are never stored, and never sent to any server.

How many working hours are in a year?

2,080 for a 40-hour week (40 × 52), 1,950 for 37.5 hours, and 1,560 for a 30-hour part-time week. Enter your actual hours per week and the calculator uses the right figure automatically.

How do I convert a day rate to an annual salary?

Multiply the day rate by your working days per year. £400 a day × 260 working days (5 days × 52 weeks) = £104,000 a year before holidays — subtract unpaid days off for the real figure.

Which offer is better: $55,000 at 45 hours/week or $50,000 at 37.5?

Convert to hourly: the first is 55,000 ÷ (45 × 52) = $23.50 an hour; the second is 50,000 ÷ (37.5 × 52) = $25.64 an hour. The smaller salary pays more per hour — convert any two offers the same way before deciding.

Does this calculator include taxes or take-home pay?

No — every figure is gross pay before deductions. Income tax, social security, pensions and insurance vary too much by jurisdiction to estimate here; this tool converts the quoted amounts only.
